Design & Architectural Integration

From inception, the core engineering mandate was to create a high-capacity system that delivered enterprise broadcast performance without imposing operational complexity on daily users.

The project was executed through an international collaboration involving engineers, programmers, and technology specialists across South Africa, Europe, and the United States. This global partnership ensured the facility met rigorous enterprise standards while remaining practical and intuitive for on-site operation.

A crucial phase of the design process involved close coordination with building contractors, electrical engineers, and interior designers. Technology was integrated discreetly into the architectural fabric—concealing core hardware while preserving the room’s sleek aesthetics, acoustic performance, and functional layout. The result is an environment where complex technology operates quietly in the background, allowing presenters and attendees to focus entirely on their content.

Displays, Content & AV-over-IP Distribution

To support a wide spectrum of applications, each space is equipped with a high-lumen Epson front projection screen, a dedicated podium monitor, and mobile confidence monitors. Because the facility is built for rapid reconfiguration, visual coverage is not limited to fixed displays:

  • AV-over-IP Matrix: Content can be ingested at various connection points around the facility and routed latency-free to virtually any display or combined zone. This allows event managers to alter seating and room layouts while ensuring every participant maintains an unobstructed view.

  • Automated Camera Tracking: For hybrid meetings, town halls, and broadcast productions, the facility features six Vaddio PTZ cameras. The cameras utilize intelligent automated tracking to follow presenters smoothly, with manual control options available for specialized camera angles.

  • Remote Participant Engagement: High-definition video capture provides remote attendees with clear, broadcast-quality views of both active speakers and audience interactions.

Audio System Architecture & Dynamic Zoning

The audio system was engineered to scale effortlessly—from localized internal team syncs to massive, multi-room broadcast town halls. Every seat across the three rooms receives clear, balanced audio, whether the spaces are operating independently or combined as one large venue.

System audio levels, dynamic zoning, and source routing are managed directly through the room’s Extron touch panels, allowing operators to send distinct audio feeds to specific zones across the facility.

Audio System Hardware Capacity

Across the three multipurpose spaces, the integrated audio infrastructure includes:

  • 21 Ceiling Microphones: Flush-mounted beamforming arrays providing full room coverage without table wire clutter.
  • 12 Digital Wireless Channels: Flexible handheld and lavalier options for presenters, panel discussions, and audience Q&A.
  • 39 Precision Loudspeakers: Carefully positioned across all zones to maintain even sound pressure levels and speech intelligibility.
  • 36 Audio Connection Points: Strategic physical I/O patch locations for auxiliary inputs, localized recording feeds, and external production gear.

Acoustic Treatment & Accessibility

Delivering clear sound in large, divisible spaces requires equal attention to room acoustics, feedback suppression, and inclusive design:

  • Acoustic Tuning & Feedback Control: The Biamp DSP matrix was carefully calibrated to minimize acoustic feedback and equalize audio across diverse presenter voices and video sources.
  • Architectural Acoustic Treatment: To reduce echo and standing waves, the rooms feature custom PET felt wall panels and high-density acoustic insulation behind wall surfaces.
  • Assistive Listening Systems: For guests requiring direct audio assistance, integrated infrared (IR) systems transmit clear feeds directly to compatible receivers, earphones, or telecoil hearing aids.

Equipment Room Architecture & Network Infrastructure

Behind every reliable, high-performance AV installation is a meticulously engineered equipment room. Serving as the nerve center for the entire 3-zone multipurpose facility, the main central rack framework was designed with serviceability, thermal efficiency, and maximum uptime at its core.

Isolated Dedicated AV Network

The network backbone carries high-throughput 4K video, multichannel digital audio, and system control traffic across the facility. To maintain security and bandwidth integrity:

  • Subnet Isolation: Built using high-capacity Cisco switching hardware, the AV system operates on its own dedicated, isolated network, entirely separate from the client’s corporate network.

  • Enhanced Cybersecurity: Only essential control interfaces communicate with the corporate LAN, shielding internal business operations from AV network traffic and eliminating reliance on corporate internet bandwidth for local room operation.

  • Fiber Interconnects: High-speed multi-strand fiber connections link the central equipment room directly to local rack nodes in each of the three multipurpose spaces, guaranteeing ultra-low latency signal distribution.

Enterprise Rack Build & Maintenance Standards

  • Structured Cabling & Label Matrix: Every cable across the facility is neatly routed through dedicated overhead cable trays and labeled using a standardized naming convention (e.g., DEV#01A, DEV#02A), making future maintenance and troubleshooting straightforward for technicians.

  • Thermal Management & HVAC Redundancy: Equipment placement within the racks was carefully arranged for optimal airflow and heat dissipation. The main equipment room features dedicated climate control backed by a secondary HVAC system to prevent thermal throttling.

  • Power Protection & UPS Uptime: Multiple Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) systems safeguard all critical hardware against sudden power fluctuations, voltage spikes, and utility load shedding, ensuring continuous, uninterrupted operation.

Control & Systems Programming

Although the underlying AV-over-IP and DSP architecture is highly sophisticated, the overriding design objective was simplicity for the end user. Non-technical staff can confidently walk into any of the three rooms and initiate a high-level presentation or hybrid videoconference without requiring dedicated technical assistance.

Intuitive User Touch Interfaces

  • Distributed Touch Panel Control: The facility features six strategically located Extron touch panels, enabling operators to manage system states from both wall locations and presenter lecterns.

  • Unified UI Design: Custom GUI programming ensures a consistent, user-friendly interface across all touch panels, allowing users to effortlessly select presentation sources, adjust zone volume levels, and manage display routing.

  • Web-Based Management: Secondary network connectivity provides support for web-based control interfaces, enabling remote monitoring and management by helpdesk technicians.

Automated Environmental & Partition Sensing

  • Optical Partition Sensors: Integrated partition sensors automatically detect when the physical dividing walls between the three multipurpose spaces are opened or closed. The control system instantly reconfigures audio routing, camera tracking zones, and video switching logic to reflect the merged or divided room states.

  • Occupancy Automation: Room occupancy sensors monitor room usage to automate power states, ensuring displays and peripheral gear power down safely when spaces are idle to reduce energy consumption.

Native Microsoft Teams Rooms (MTR) Integration

  • Unified Meeting Workflow: The Extron control platform bridges directly into the Microsoft Teams Rooms engine. Users can transition between local in-room presentations and global hybrid Teams calls without toggling between separate systems or complex remotes.

  • One-Touch Join: Participants can join scheduled Microsoft Teams meetings with a single touch from the main table console, automatically waking the room’s projectors, audio DSP, and Vaddio tracking cameras.
